Bentonite - Clay litters have 90% of US and World Market - strip mining - WHY STILL TODAY?

The clay—or sodium bentonite, more specifically—is obtained via strip mining, requiring massive amounts of soil and rock to be moved in order to access the mineral seam underneath. The result is a giant hole in the ground that needs to be filled and then returned to something resembling a natural state.

1) Strip mining destroys landscapes, forests and wildlife habitats at the site of the mine when trees, plants, and topsoil are cleared from the mining area. This in turn leads to soil erosion and destruction of agricultural land.

2) When rain washes the loosened top soil into streams, sediments pollute waterways. This can hurt fish and smother plant life downstream, and cause disfiguration of river channels and streams, which leads to flooding.

3) There is an increased risk of chemical contamination of ground water when minerals in upturned earth seep into the water table, and watersheds are destroyed when disfigured land loses the water it once held.

4) Strip mining causes dust and noise pollution when top soil is disrupted with heavy machinery and coal dust is created in mines.

5) Not only is the conventional clay cat litter mined in destructive ways, bentonite clay cat litter is also known to contain silica dust, which is classified as a carcinogen according to California’s Proposition 65.

Bentonite in clumping litters are harmful to cats and dogs and fume/dust for humans. Bentonite is the cause of concern for pets (links below). It has been suggested that clumping cat litter can cause digestive harm if ingested by cats while cleaning. Sodium bentonite clay in clumping cat litters swell up to 15 times its original volume when a cat urinates or defecates into it. When cats ingest this material it can cause gastrointestinal distress that in some cases can lead to death.

When taken orally, sodium alginate binds to and blocks the intestinal absorption of various isotopes, such as radium Ra 226 (Ra-226) and strontium Sr 90 (Sr-90). In the litter SA molecules are attached to the base litter material. Small amount of mineral oil prevent SA from settling over time.

Having instantaneous strong clumps is a significant competitive advantage relative to the performance of other litter products on the market. Through gel cross-linking mechanism, the litter clump continues to increase in strength over time. The short-term and long-term strength of my litter is therefore far superior to other litter products. My product consistently performs as good as or better than any currently marketed sodium bentonite clumping litter. Furthermore, my clumping litter product dries faster than the leading brands of clay-clumping litters, which makes my product better suited for hooded and automatic litter boxes. Traditional clay litters swell instantly to form a clump, but their clumps are typically “gooey” because they dry slowly; however, the clumps with my litter dry fast resulting in no more gooey clumps.
